In the words of William Blake ‘I have conversed with the spiritual Sun. I saw him on Primrose Hill’. It’s my heaven as well. One of my favourite places in London. It’s such a privilege to be able to take a stroll up Primrose Hill most days. It has one of the best panoramas the capital has to offer, but also fields of green, beautiful trees, and yes… tourists. However, they usually just visit the same spot so it’s easy to walk a bit further and be alone with your thoughts. You can read more about Primrose Hill here.
Sylvia and Ted settled in Primrose Hill, in a small, unfurnished flat at 3 Chalcot Square, which cost six guineas a week, and soon they were mixing with the likes of the American poet WS Merwin and his wife Dido, John Lehmann (the editor of The London Magazine) and Karl Miller (then the literary editor of The Spectator). In May, Ted and Sylvia were invited, along with Stephen and Natasha Spender, to supper at TS Eliot’s flat in Kensington Court Gardens, which she described as a rather ‘drab’ building. The evening was spent gossiping about the private lives of DH Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, WH Auden and Stravinsky. The following month the two poets went to a cocktail party hosted by Faber & Faber, Ted’s publishers, where Hughes had his photograph taken with Eliot, Auden, Louis MacNeice and Spender. ‘Three generations of Faber poets here,’ observed Charles Monteith, one of the directors of the publishing house. ‘Wonderful!’
