This paper aims to examine the self-identity of moral agent from the perspective of Charles Taylor. The result of the study is as follows. First of all, we as ‘moral agents engaged in an ordinary life’ identify our self-identity by a self-reflection or a dialogue between interlocutors through use of ordinary languages. Language is made by a community sharing certain background understandings. So, language and community both are essential in shaping our self-identity. Here, a background means a context of ordinary life that is a precondition of intelligibility for our experience and use of ordinary languages. We can articulate part of a boundless, uncertain background by our transcendental intelligibility. It is a practical, potential capacity. Hence, the establishment of our self-identity means a course of self-realization. In other words, we constantly identify and fulfill ourselves in a lifetime. Secondly, our self-identity is closely related to the notion of good. We qualitatively rank various goods in moral frameworks that necessarily involve‘strong evaluation’. We can distinguish ‘hypergoods’ from other goods by it. Also, it gives the ultimate end of life to us. In other words, the moral orientation related to hypergoods shows one’s own characteristics. So, it is also essential in shaping our self-identity. And the notion of good is necessarily made by a certain community or culture. Also, it can be given its meaning only when it is an object of our common understandings. Lastly, we can morally change by our practical reason. Such change means not a simple change, but practical growth. It means not only the expansion of our background understandings, but it implies also that we can get to interpret moral issues in the best ways. Therefore, practical reason is moral insight, moral discernment as well as another name for intelligibility. By it, we can continuously go through rational moral transitions that means a discovery of contradiction, an error-reducing, a dissolution of various conflicts, and so on. On this basis, I think that we can find the significance of the study as follows. First, given that a self-identity is inevitably shaped a certain language community, we are essentially social beings. Second, given that a self-identity is closely related to the notion of good, we are essentially moral beings. Third, given that a self has a natural capacity for a his or her self-fulfillment, we are potential beings. But in the way that our potential and practical growth is allowed to only when our free-will is practiced, we are essentially free, active beings, too.
